Chapter 14: A Companion Along the Way

Their footsteps were heavy as they walked away, the sand and dirt shifting beneath their feet as they left the tarmac. In the distance, Daniel spotted an incoming brown haze. Soon, the dust storm would arrive. Once it did, it would be almost impossible to see, and anyone outside would likely never again be seen.

“Sturgess, try to keep up with me and don’t linger. I don’t like the look of that storm, and the last thing either of us wants is to be separated,” Daniel cautioned, more for Sturgess’s benefit than his own. For the time being, Daniel needed to keep his attention focused on his surroundings as he weaved between the ruined buildings. He needed an entry into the terminal.

During his first life, Daniel had never explored any of the areas outside the tarmac. It filled him with shame, since Daniel had remained hidden during almost the entire duration of the clearing of the first floor. What he knew, he knew second hand from his friends, and people who had been willing to build him up. And I’ll always keep trying to repay that debt, he thought with a warm smile as his memories turned to the past.
